Daze Synopsis
When the outside world arrives on Hawaii's shores for the first time, a sheltered prince must choose between the traditions that shaped him and the future only he can imagine.
Set in 1779 on the Big Island of Hawaii, Daze of Discovery is an epic adult animated musical comedy where romance, adventure, mythology, and history collide in spectacular fashion.
The people of Kealakekua Bay joyfully celebrate what they believe is a tropical paradise in the opening number, As Good As It Gets. Watching from behind the walls of a guarded royal compound is Prince Kamehameha—"Kam"—who has spent his entire life in protective isolation. On his twentieth birthday, he slips into town, where he meets the irreverent Wiki and his spirited twin sister Lili. Despite an awkward first encounter, the trio quickly discover they all share the same birthday, forging an immediate bond.
Kam reveals that he has been hidden since birth because an ancient prophecy foretold that the child born beneath Pele's Fireball—Halley's Comet—would change Hawaii forever. In Victim of a Myth, he rejects the destiny others have written for him and vows to chart his own course.
The musical is suddenly interrupted by an explosive volcanic eruption. Pele, the fiery goddess, declares the story far too sentimental and recruits fellow gods Ku, god of war, and Lono, god of fertility, to demand a more truthful version of events. They appoint the witty, non-binary Aunty Mahu as narrator, whose irreverent commentary guides both audience and characters through the unfolding tale.
Mahu introduces Hawaii's rigid kapu system, enforced by Kam's calculating uncle, King Kal, and his ruthless high priest, Koa. Their comic villain anthem, Cohorts in Cahoots, celebrates a society where breaking sacred laws often means death—unless the accused can reach the sanctuary of Puʻuhonua, the Place of Refuge.
Far across the Pacific, another dreamer pursues destiny. Captain James Cook revels in exploration aboard HMS Resolution in the title song, Daze of Discovery, unknowingly sailing toward history.
Life in Old Hawaii unfolds through a vibrant montage of surfing, kite flying, martial arts, navigation, craftsmanship, and communal celebration. Kam trains as a warrior while Wiki and Lili thrive through their creativity and ingenuity. In Far As Man Can Go, Aunty Mahu recounts the astonishing Polynesian voyage that first settled Hawaii centuries earlier.
As affection grows between the friends, Wiki celebrates youthful freedom in Loads of Love, reflecting the accepted same-sex relationships that existed in pre-contact Hawaiian culture. Kam and Wiki's friendship deepens into an enduring aikāne bond in My Aikane (Buddies with Benefits), while Lili quietly struggles with her own unrequited feelings in Wahine Blues. Kam, increasingly suspicious of his uncle's motives, wonders Who Can I Trust?
Everything changes during the Makahiki harvest festival. As Koa prays for rain after months of drought, a towering European ship suddenly appears in the bay. Captain Cook has arrived.
Believing the timing fulfills ancient prophecy, King Kal and Koa proclaim Cook to be the returning god Lono. The island erupts in celebration as Hawaiians and Britons exchange music, dance, gifts, and customs in the exuberant Aloha Hula Luau.
Curious about the wider world, Kam and Wiki visit Cook aboard Resolution. Fascinated by maps, science, and distant civilizations, Kam forms an unexpected friendship with the explorer in Two of a Mind. Cook even invites the prince to sail with him around the globe. Yet Kam's growing excitement is tempered by an unsettling realization: the arrival of outsiders could transform—or destroy—the world he loves.
After a prophetic nightmare, Kam embraces a greater destiny. He vows to unite Hawaii's warring kingdoms into one nation and invokes Ku for strength in the battles ahead.
Relations between hosts and visitors gradually deteriorate. Although the Hawaiians generously provide food, water, timber, and hospitality, tensions mount as Cook's crew overstays its welcome. When the British finally depart, the island rejoices—until Lono, furious that Cook has been mistaken for a god, unleashes a violent storm that cripples Resolutionand forces it back to Hawaii for repairs.
The welcome is now anything but warm. Seeking to sever Kam's growing admiration for Cook, Wiki impulsively steals one of the British cutters. Cook responds with outrage, setting both cultures on a collision course.
The confrontation escalates into tragedy in Cutter Catastrophe. Attempting to seize the king as leverage, Cook lands with armed marines. Kam intervenes and is wounded. Disguised as a young nobleman, Lili courageously prevents Cook from killing the king, but Cook himself is overwhelmed and dies on the beach.
Both Hawaiians and Britons mourn the fallen explorer in the moving Farewell to a Chief, honoring a man whose curiosity forever changed the Pacific.
Peace proves fleeting. When Koa discovers that the king's mysterious rescuer was actually Lili disguised as a man—a capital violation of kapu—he sentences her to death. Wiki volunteers to take her place, earning one chance to escape to Puʻuhonua.
The finale becomes a breathtaking pursuit across land and sea. Racing toward sanctuary on a surfboard, Wiki is chased by royal warriors in canoes and hungry sharks. As hope fades, Kam launches himself from a giant kite, lands beside his friend, and together they ride the waves to freedom with a little divine intervention and a triumphant reprise of My Aikane.
Their miraculous escape inspires the island. Rain finally falls, flowers bloom, and a rainbow stretches across the sky as the company celebrates family, friendship, courage, and the spirit of aloha in the finale, ʻOhana Mana.
Aunty Mahu reveals that Kam will indeed fulfill his destiny—uniting the Hawaiian Islands and becoming their greatest king—while he and Wiki remain lifelong aikāne. The gods offer one last round of irreverent commentary before Pele closes the curtain with one final spectacular volcanic eruption.
